Monsoon-Proof Your Tin Shed: Complete Waterproofing Guide for Delhi NCR
Every monsoon, we get calls about leaking sheds, rusted sheets, and water pooling inside. Most of these problems are preventable. Here's exactly how to monsoon-proof your shed before the rains hit.
Delhi NCR's monsoon isn't just heavy rain — it's sudden, intense downpours followed by humidity that lingers for weeks. A shed built without monsoon in mind will start showing problems within the first one or two seasons: leaks at joints, rust streaks, and water collecting where it shouldn't.
The good news is that almost all of this is preventable with the right design choices and a bit of yearly maintenance. Here's our complete monsoon-proofing checklist.
Where Tin Sheds Actually Leak
Leaks almost never happen in the middle of a sheet — they happen at predictable weak points:
- Sheet overlaps: where two sheets join, if the overlap is too small or not sealed
- Screw/bolt points: every fastener hole is a potential entry point for water if the washer seal fails
- Ridge joints: where the roof meets at the top, a common weak spot
- Wall-to-roof junctions: where the roof sheet meets the side wall
1. Get the Sheet Overlap Right
This is the single biggest factor in monsoon performance. In Delhi NCR's heavy rain, we recommend:
- Minimum 150mm side overlap (not the 75–100mm many contractors use to save material)
- Minimum 200mm end overlap on the slope direction
- Overlaps sealed with butyl tape or silicone sealant, not left dry
2. Use EPDM Rubber Washers on Every Fastener
Cheap fasteners use flat metal washers or thin plastic ones that crack within a year. EPDM (rubber) washers cost slightly more but seal the screw hole properly and last 10+ years without leaking.
3. Roof Slope Matters More Than People Think
A flatter roof looks fine in summer but struggles in monsoon — water sits longer and finds every weak point. We recommend:
- Minimum 10–15 degree slope for standard tin sheds
- Steeper slope (18–22 degrees) for larger spans or areas with heavy waterlogging history
4. Don't Skip the Gutter & Drainage System
Without a proper gutter, rainwater runs straight off the roof edge and erodes the ground next to the shed — over time this undermines the foundation. A basic drainage setup should include:
- GI gutter channels along the lower roof edge
- Downpipes directing water at least 3–4 feet away from the base
- Slightly raised plinth (4–6 inches) so ground water doesn't flow inside during heavy rain
⚠️ Common mistake: Many low-cost sheds skip gutters entirely to save ₹15–20/sq.ft. This almost always costs more later in foundation repair and water damage.
5. Rust Prevention for the Monsoon Season
Humidity is what causes rust, not just direct rain contact. Key prevention steps:
- Use GI (galvanized iron) sheets of at least 0.45mm thickness — thinner sheets rust faster
- Color-coated sheets add an extra protective layer over the galvanized coating
- Touch up any scratched or exposed edges with anti-rust primer before monsoon starts
- Clear leaves and debris from gutters — trapped moisture under debris accelerates rust
💰 Monsoon-Proofing Add-On Costs — Delhi NCR 2026
Sealant at overlaps & joints₹6–10/sq.ft
EPDM rubber washers (upgrade)₹4–6/sq.ft
GI gutter & downpipe system₹15–25/running ft
Raised plinth/foundation₹40–60/sq.ft
Pre-Monsoon Checklist for Existing Sheds
- Inspect all overlaps and joints for gaps or worn sealant
- Check every fastener point for loose screws or cracked washers
- Clear gutters and downpipes of any blockage
- Look for rust spots and treat them before the rains start
- Check the ground slope around the shed base for proper drainage away from the structure
Conclusion
A monsoon-ready tin shed isn't about using more material — it's about getting the details right: overlaps, sealing, slope, and drainage. R.R Teen Set Solution builds every shed with Delhi NCR's monsoon in mind, and we also offer pre-monsoon inspection visits for existing sheds.
